1. Overview
A CNC Vertical Lathe (VTL) is a high-precision, heavy-duty computer-controlled machine tool designed specifically for machining large, heavy, disc-shaped, ring-shaped and wheel-type workpieces. Different from traditional horizontal lathes, the vertical lathe adopts a vertical spindle structure and horizontal rotary table layout, which allows heavy workpieces to be placed stably without deformation. It is widely used in automotive, wind power, machinery, petroleum, aerospace and mold industries for turning, boring, milling, drilling and compound precision processing.
Thanks to its high rigidity, stable precision and strong heavy-cutting capacity, the CNC vertical lathe has become the core equipment for medium and large circular component machining in modern manufacturing.
2. Working Principle of CNC Vertical Lathe
The working logic of a vertical CNC lathe is simple and efficient:
1. The heavy workpiece is fixed firmly on the horizontal rotary worktable, avoiding gravity sagging and deformation.
2. The CNC system sends servo control commands to drive the worktable for constant-speed or variable-speed rotation.
3. The vertical tool post or cross beam moves precisely along X-axis and Z-axis to feed tools.
4. The cutting tool removes material from the rotating workpiece to complete outer diameter, inner hole, end face, groove and contour machining.
5. Equipped with closed-loop feedback system and thermal compensation function, the machine continuously corrects tiny errors to ensure long-term stable precision.
3. Core Machine Structure & Technical Configuration
The high performance of CNC vertical lathes comes from its optimized mechanical structure:
3.1 Machine Bed & Column
The whole body adopts high-strength cast iron (HT300) with artificial aging treatment to completely eliminate internal stress. The thickened integral structure provides ultra-high rigidity, effectively resisting vibration and cutting force during heavy machining, ensuring long-term dimensional stability.
3.2 Rotary Worktable
The worktable adopts high-precision static pressure bearing structure, featuring heavy load capacity, stable rotation and low noise. It can bear ultra-heavy workpieces without shaking. The table runout is strictly controlled within 0.002mm, which guarantees excellent finish for end-face and circular machining.
3.3 Tool Post & Turret System
Equipped with high-precision servo turret (8/12 stations optional), fast tool changing speed and high positioning repeatability. Optional vertical tool post or cross beam moving structure to meet the processing requirements of different workpiece heights and diameters. Some models support turning-milling composite function to realize multi-process one-time clamping.
3.4 CNC Control System
Supports mainstream systems such as FANUC, SIEMENS and Huazhong CNC. With intelligent cutting parameter optimization, backlash compensation, thermal error compensation and automatic tool wear detection functions. It supports G-code automatic programming, simulation processing and multi-axis linkage operation.
3.5 Cooling & Chip Removal System
Equipped with high-pressure cooling system to reduce cutting temperature and improve surface finish. Matched with spiral chip conveyor or chain chip conveyor to realize automatic chip removal, ensuring continuous and efficient production.
4. Key Technical Advantages of CNC Vertical Lathe
4.1 Ultra-high rigidity and stability Vertical structure makes the cutting force direction consistent with gravity, greatly reducing workpiece deformation and machine vibration, suitable for heavy roughing and precision finishing.
4.2 Perfect for large and heavy workpieces Horizontal table bearing capacity is far higher than horizontal lathe, solving the clamping difficulty of super-large disc and wheel parts.
4.3 High machining accuracy With full closed-loop grating scale detection, positioning accuracy reaches ±0.003mm, repeat positioning accuracy ±0.001mm, meeting automotive and aerospace high-standard tolerance requirements.
4.4 High processing efficiency One-time clamping completes turning, boring, milling and drilling, reducing repeated clamping errors and improving production efficiency by more than 30% compared with traditional equipment.
4.5 Low long-term maintenance cost Stable casting structure and mature configuration ensure low failure rate and long service life.
5. Main Types of CNC Vertical Lathes
Single-column CNC Vertical Lathe Compact structure, small floor space, cost-effective. Mainly used for small and medium-sized disc parts within 1600mm diameter.
Double-column CNC Vertical Lathe Double-sided symmetrical structure, super high rigidity. Suitable for large-diameter, super-heavy workpieces such as wind power flanges and mining equipment parts.
Moving Beam Vertical Lathe The cross beam can move up and down freely, with ultra-large processing stroke, suitable for high and special-shaped workpieces.
Turning-milling Composite Vertical Lathe Integrates milling and drilling functions, realizing multi-process composite machining, widely used for complex precision parts.
